Vic was the guest DJ at the Organized Grime guys' new Speakers Corner event which moved to SoHo and moved to 4th Fridays. Went and hung out and was a great evening. See pics below:

Took Vic to a car show that Saturday. Yes, he likes cars, A LOT. Complete surprise which was fun. He had no idea. It was a street car show, so all regular peoples' cars they had done up. Was small, but lots of neat cars. You can see the ones I liked:
Yeah, I like Mustangs. I come by it honestly, as both my parents do too. My first car was a Mustang. Is it wrong, as a Biologist working against the clock of global warming to enjoy cars? Well, that's a deeper discussion than I care to get into for now. In any case, cars are what they are and if you have to have one, a Mustang sure is awesome. Of course, now, I'd much rather be in my Mini (and it gets much better gas mileage too). (See previous post for more about Minis!)
Almost just as exciting as the surprise car show, I also took Vic for his first ever shave ice. 3 years in Hawaii and just now getting one. He loved it, of course! That little spot next to Fat Greek and Taj Mahal at the corner of St. Louis and Wailae makes the best shave ice in town...
The next day took Vic to the Greek Festival as a surprise again...so proud of myself as I usually don't get to surprise him much and managed to pull off two in one weekend. Both of us LOVE Greek food, so thought this would be a great idea. Turns out, we are spoiled. We go to the Olive Tree in Kahala and the Fat Greek by University quite often. Both restaurants have great food and you can sit down and eat whenever. Greek Festival was super-crowded with HUGE lines for food and the food selection was limited. Got in some great people watching though, but totally forgot to take pictures. Did take a pic outside the festival though....

The week at work was good. We got a new intern, Kairo Joseph, who will be with us for the next 3 months. Out here from Staten Island, NYC, he's very stoked about coral and our research and eager to be here.

On top of getting ready for what might be the last Fungia spawn of the year, my good friend Jake came to visit this past week from Minnesota. Jake lived here a few years ago and was one of the original promoters for Pacific Jungle. It was great to have him back in town, but wish I could have spent more time with him.
Jake was around when we used to go to Gyu Kaku every Friday with a group of between 4 and 8 people. This was for about 8 months straight almost back in 2005-2006. So, of course, there had to be a Gyu Kaku visit while he was here...nom nom nom...

Friday night was Subphonix and it was great having Jake there. He even helped us pack up the car and load in.

Saturday had to go out to work around 5pm for the Fungia spawning. Got a decent spawn, but for some reason a vast majority of the corals in the tanks out at the point lab spawned as females (they can change sex from month to month and year to year and spawn either eggs or sperm, but never both at once). The boys just barely pulled it out at the end, so we were able to do the experiments we had planned. Sunday was an ok spawn again, but much less than Saturday night. Monday we got practically nothing, just one lone female spawning less than stellar looking eggs, so we called it a night early. Good to get some things done Saturday and Sunday though.
These corals spawn every full moon from May until potentially October, however, the earlier or later in the year the less likely they are to spawn much and to spawn well, so May, September and October are always a little iffy. It was good to get to do a bit though. We may watch in October, but seeing what they did this past week, I don't have much hope.
Got to hang out with Jake a bit more before he left. He and Vic did some serious shoe shopping. I should have gotten a pic of him with all his shoes. I think he bought 3 or 4 pairs and I was amazed he fit them all in his suitcase. Vic bought me some new DCs which are awesome. I fit into a kids size, as usual and they are definitely junglist shoes, so be on the look out for the awesomeness next time I'm out.

Off to bed, between blogging and watching Top Chef, it has gotten late. Tomorrow I am packing and then Vic and I are off to the airport for a trip to Virginia to see my parents. Stoked to be going out at a time when it isn't cold there. Looking forward to playing on the lake and riding my horse, Nova, seeing my parents and some friends and getting to go to a Virginia Tech football game. My first one in 5 years at least. So excited.
